The five minute reset every healthcare worker needs

Most caregivers finish a shift with nothing left to give. The instinct is to collapse, scroll, and start again tomorrow. A short, repeatable ritual works better than a long routine you never actually do.

Start by changing out of your scrubs the moment you get home. It signals to your nervous system that the shift is over. Light a candle, set a timer for five minutes, and sit somewhere that is not your bed.

Breathe in for four counts, hold for four, out for six. Repeat ten times. Slower exhales tell your body it is safe to come down from high alert.

Finish by naming one thing that went well and one thing you are releasing. Say both out loud. This is not about positivity, it is about closing the loop so the day does not follow you into the night.

Do this for two weeks and notice what changes. Rest is not a reward for finishing everything, it is part of how you keep showing up.
